5 Seconds Of Summer guitarist Michael Clifford has denied allegations that he sexually assaulted fans – describing them as “completely false”.
The 24-year-old was responding to comments on Twitter that claimed he “inappropriately touched” an underage fan after asking her back to his hotel room in 2014.
The Australian musician wrote: “I am heartbroken to read these things that are being said – they are just BEYOND untrue. I was never allowed in the crowd I only ever watched at front of house – and I would’ve never EVER done that.”
Another fan alleged that Clifford “slid his hand under” her mini skirt when she was 14.
The user had written: “I bet he doesn’t even remember because to him [he] was playing but to me it was and still feels traumatic. I swear it’s true.”
Her comment has since been deleted.
When fans reached out to him for further details, he responded: “I really just don’t know what I can even say. People are asking me to explain but how can I explain something that I was never involved with in the first place? I truly want to give you what you’re asking from me but what more can I say?”
He later posted a video of the band being mobbed by fans in Montreal, Canada, on 3 July 2013.
He wrote: “This is what life was like in 2013 – please understand it would’ve been logistically impossible for me to get through a crowd at a show I just played at! I’m not trying to be defensive I promise this is just so completely false.”
Clifford had earlier apologised for offensive tweets he posted in the past, containing sexist and homophobic comments.
He had written: “I am so f****** sorry for all the dumb s*** I did when I was younger. I am a different person now with a much better understanding of the world.
“Some people have access to a digital megaphone a bit earlier than they should, unfortunately, I was one of them.”
He added: “I am so sorry for hurting anyone. it was never my intention. I was so naive, and I am embarrassed and I am beyond sorry. I will continue to be better and I will continue to change. I never want to hurt anyone again.”
5 Seconds Of Summer formed in Sydney in 2011, and originally found fame on YouTube before supporting with One Direction on their 2013 Take Me Home tour.
Made up of Clifford, lead singer Luke Hemmings, bassist Calum Hood and drummer Ashton Irwin, the band were named by Billboard as one of the most successful artists of the 2010s earlier this year.
Sky News has approached Clifford and the band for comment.
