The writers of Avengers: Endgame reveal Bucky (Sebastian Stan) was briefly considered to be the next Captain America. At the end of the Joe and Anthony Russo-directed movie, Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) decides to finally walk away from his superhero gig, passing the shield and effectively, the mantle to Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie). This surprised and disappointed some people, especially those who were hoping to see Bucky assume the superhero persona on the big screen.
Steve and Bucky had been friends for the longest time, but after a series of tragedies that resulted in the latter becoming a brainwashed HYDRA operative known as the Winter Soldier, their bond was tested in Captain America: Civil War. It happened again in Avengers: Infinity War, where Thanos (Josh Brolin) wiped out half of life in the universe. Once everything was back to normal at the end of Endgame, the pair reunited only to say goodbye to each other once again as Steve retires from being the Star Spangled Avenger, while Bucky continues his rehabilitation. Unfortunately, for those who were pining to see Bucky wield the iconic shield after his best bud, Marvel Studios had a different plan in mind.

As fans know, Sam is now poised to be the MCU’s next Captain America, but that wasn’t always the case. Avengers: Endgame writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely reveled during a watch party for the film they briefly considered Bucky to be Steve’s chosen heir for the shield. However, they ultimately scrapped the idea as Sam fit Captain America’s idealism better. Check out their full tweet below:
With Steve’s presumed retirement in Avengers: Endgame, Stan was asked about the possibility of inheriting the Captain America mantle in the MCU. Stan would indulge, giving his opinion about it, but without giving any hint there’s another successor to the shield. After the the film came out, and Sam was confirmed to be the next Captain America, the actor has come out a few times defending Steve’s decision, explaining it boiled down to the fact that Bucky is still a work in progress. As cool as it is to be the next owner of the shield, it comes with its own set of responsibilities. On top of that, there’s additional pressure to perform well since Steve set a pretty high bar for the hero.
Steve actually echoed Markus and McFeely’s sentiments in Avengers: Endgame. Just before he traveled back in time to return the stones, he told him he’s a good man – echoing the same thing that Abraham Erskine (Stanley Tucci) told him just before he got the Super Soldier serum. This doesn’t mean, however, that Bucky isn’t a good guy. At his core he is, but he has a lot of personal baggage that he needs to sort out first. It’s unfair to derail his rehabilitation progress just so he can carry out a role that would demand too much all at once from him. While he won’t be the next Captain America, Bucky’s adventures continue as he joins Sam in the upcoming Disney+ show, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.
