Tom Holland has three franchise movies scheduled for 2021 (Spider-Man: Homecoming 3, Uncharted, and Chaos Walking); here’s what you need to know. The young actor has quickly become a big name over the last five years, largely thanks to his role as Peter Parker in the MCU. Prior to making his debut as the web-slinger during 2016’s Captain America: Civil War, Holland got his start in film playing smaller roles in highbrow historical fare like In the Heart of the Sea and The Lost City of Z. He hasn’t completely stopped making prestigious dramas since then either, having recently appeared in true story-inspired features like The Current War.

Although it’s now been officially a year since his last live-action appearance in Spider-Man: Far From Home, Holland has continued to pop up in CGI animated form over the last twelve months, including a reunion with his MCU costar Robert Downey Jr. in the box office bomb Dolittle in January (where Holland voiced the glasses-wearing pup Jip). It’s not because he’s been resting, either; the actor already has two new live-action projects – Cherry and The Devil All the Time – in the can, and both of them could potentially arrive via streaming later this year. If that wasn’t enough, he’s currently gearing up to shoot Uncharted and Homecoming 3 back to back after their productions were delayed by the coronavirus lockdowns back in the spring.
In addition to those two movies, Holland (at the time of writing) has a third film slated to hit theaters in 2021: Lionsgate’s belated YA sci-fi novel adaptation Chaos Walking. Here’s a quick rundown on all three franchise movies.
An adaptation of Patrick Ness’ 2008 book The Knife of Never Letting Go (the first entry in his Chaos Walking trilogy), the Chaos Walking movie takes place in a dystopian future where all women have (supposedly…) been killed by a pathogen and the survivors can now hear other people and animals’ thoughts (an ability known as Noise). Holland and his costar Daisy Ridley shot the film with Bourne Identity and Edge of Tomorrow director Doug Liman all the way back in mid-late 2017, but it was later delayed from its original release date in 2019 to undergo reshoots following poor test screenings. Due to its stars’ heavy workloads in 2018, the reshoots weren’t able to take place until Spring 2019, which explains why Chaos Walking is now slated to open on January 22, 2021. Between reports of the movie’s earlier cut being a mess and the YA sci-fi movie trend having died off lately, Chaos Walking isn’t expected to do well enough to get a sequel (though, obviously, it may yet surprise).
After years of trying (and failing) to get the movie off the ground, Sony is finally ready to begin shooting its adaptation of the Uncharted video games. In its current form, the movie is set to star Holland as a young Nathan Drake and serve as an origin story for his evolution into an Indiana Jones-style treasure hunter. Amusingly, the film has been in development for so long, Holland’s costar Mark Wahlberg (who’s playing Drake’s mentor, Victor “Sully” Sullivan) was actually attached to play Drake in an earlier iteration. Its run of bad luck continued into March when the ongoing pandemic forced Uncharted to shut down on (literally) what would’ve been its first day of shooting. Director Ruben Fleischer (Venom) is now gearing up to begin filming in the immediate future, in order to keep the movie on-schedule to make its (tentative) July 16, 2021 release date. With a popular young star onboard, Uncharted has the potential to give Sony a lucrative action-adventure franchise for years to come… though, in light of the movie’s troubled history and the general track record for video game adaptations, the studio might not want to count their eggs before they’ve hatched.
Director Jon Watts’ as-yet untitled third MCU Spider-Man movie will finally pay off the mid-credits cliffhanger in Far From Home, e.g. Peter having his secret identity outed by J. Jonah Jameson (J.K. Simmons, reprising his fan-favorite role from Sam Raimi’s pre-MCU Spider-Man trilogy). Per usual for the MCU, plot and character details for Spider-Man: Homecoming 3 (again, not the official title) are otherwise under lock and key ahead of the movie beginning production. Currently, the hope is Holland will be able to start filming Uncharted this month and wrap up his work by the time fall rolls around, allowing Watts to roll camera on his latest web-slinging adventure shortly after and have it ready to reach theaters by November 5, 2021 (which is where Sony moved it after giving its former date to Uncharted, in response to the COVID-19 lockdowns). After that, Holland is contracted to appear in at least one more Marvel Studios film, and may yet show up in one or more of the upcoming movies Sony is developing for its Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters.
