Josh Boone has revealed that due to a contractual obligation, his long-awaited X-Men movie, The New Mutants, has to be released in theaters before it hits any streaming service like Disney+, Hulu or VOD. Boone, who was best known for directing teen drama The Fault In Our Stars before taking on the job of helming The New Mutants, has had to endure seeing his movie delayed on multiple occasions.
While the director says the delays allowed him to tweak the movie to get it just right, he’s also said he wants to see it finally released in theaters after years of delays. With the release date now (hopefully) just a month away, Boone released new footage from The New Mutants at this weekend’s San Diego Comic-con@Home. However, with theaters around the world still closed due to coronavirus, and other major releases like Tenet taking a new release strategy, many have questioned why the long-delayed movie doesn’t just get a digital release, either On-Demand or on a streaming service like Disney+ or Hulu.

Now, Boone has revealed there is a reason the movie won’t see the light of day until it’s seen in theaters. Speaking to Collider, the director says that there is a contract in place, signed long before the current pandemic, that states the movie has to open in theaters before it can be released in any digital format. Despite saying earlier this week that he doesn’t get told release plans, Boone is clearly in the know on this aspect of the release. You can read his full comments on the matter below.
“With most movies, you sign contracts that guarantee a theatrical release, so it needs to open to ever go digital in the first place. We just, too, would like to see people to see it in the theater. But it needs to obviously be at the right time when it’s safe to go back.”
Boone clearly is desperate to see his creation finally up on the big screen. The footage seen at SDCC this weekend teases some fairly large-scale action setpieces filled with expensive-looking CGI, and so it makes sense for the director to want audiences to see The New Mutants in the theater. Whether he actually gets his wish as soon as August 28, the current release date for the movie remains to be seen.
Many studios are waiting to see what happens with the pandemic before they release anything, and The New Mutants may well suffer yet another delay, just like a number of other Disney movies have. The media giant, who owns 20th Century Studios (formerly Fox), won’t want to risk dropping a large budget release in theaters when most aren’t open, and audiences are unwilling to visit those that are.
Whatever transpires, it’s obvious that The New Mutants is a movie that Boone and Disney are determined to release. They just need to figure out how and when, and in these uncertain times, that’s easier said than done. Hopefully, when it does release, the movie is worth the wait after all these years of delays.
